How to Ask Readers for a Review: Email Templates for Authors
A note on the rules: Amazon does not allow reviews in exchange for money, gifts or other compensation, and you must never require a reader to post a review on Amazon. Everything below is about finding readers who may choose to leave an honest, voluntary opinion. No method can promise reviews or star ratings.
Asking for a review feels awkward, but a kind, clear message works. Good requests are short, personal and low pressure. Below are templates you can adapt.
Principles
- Say thank you first.
- Make it clear the review is optional.
- Ask for an honest opinion, never a positive one.
- Make it easy: include a direct link.
- Never offer anything in return.
Template 1: Newsletter, after launch
Subject: Thank you for reading
Hi [first name],
My new book, [title], is out today. Thank you for being part of this journey. If you read it and feel like sharing your honest opinion, a short review on [Amazon / Goodreads] helps other readers decide if it is for them. It is completely optional, and all feedback is welcome. Here is the link: [link]
Warm regards,
[author name]
Template 2: Invitation to your ARC team
Subject: Want to read [title] early?
Hi [first name],
I am looking for readers who would like a free advance copy of [title], a [genre] novel. There is no obligation. If you enjoy it and want to share an honest review, that is welcome, and if you would rather not, that is fine too. If you do post one, please mention that you received a free copy.
Interested? Reply to this email and I will send the file.
Template 3: Pitch to a book blogger
Subject: Review request: [title] ([genre])
Hi [blogger name],
I read your review of [book you actually read on their blog] and loved your take on [detail]. My [genre] book, [title], has a similar [theme]. Here is a one-line pitch: [pitch]. It is [length] and available as [format].
I know you are busy and I fully understand if it is not a fit for your schedule or policy. If it is, I would be happy to send a free copy. Thank you for your time.
Template 4: One gentle reminder
Hi [first name], just a quick note to say thanks for taking an advance copy of [title]. If you have finished it and would like to share your thoughts, the link is here: [link]. No pressure at all.
What not to write
- "Review my book and get a gift card."
- "Only leave a review if you can give 5 stars."
- "You must post your review on Amazon to receive the book."
These break Amazon's policy. See what is allowed and what is not.
