ARC Readers: How to Find Them for Your Indie Book

A note on the rules: Amazon does not allow reviews in exchange for money, gifts or other compensation, and you must never require a reader to post a review on Amazon. Everything below is about finding readers who may choose to leave an honest, voluntary opinion. No method can promise reviews or star ratings.

What is an ARC reader?

An ARC (advance reader copy) is a free copy of your book that you share with readers before or around launch day. ARC readers read it early and may, if they like, share an honest opinion on a site such as Goodreads, a blog or a retailer. The word "may" matters: you give the book freely, and the reader is under no obligation.

Why ARCs help indie authors

Where to find ARC readers

1. Your own mailing list

Your best ARC readers are people who already like your work. Add a short note to your newsletter or the back matter of your previous book inviting readers to join your advance team.

2. Reader communities and genre groups

Genre-specific Facebook groups, subreddits and Discord servers often have threads where authors may offer ARCs. Read each group's rules first and never spam.

3. Book bloggers and bookstagrammers

Small bloggers in your genre often accept ARC requests. Our guide on asking readers for a review includes a pitch template.

4. ARC platforms

Dedicated platforms connect authors with readers who like to read before publication. Terms, fees and reader quality differ, so check each platform's current rules before you commit. On GetBookReviews you can promote your book to readers who browse for new indie titles.

How to run a clean ARC program

  1. Choose a format. EPUB, MOBI or PDF through a delivery service. Watermark if you worry about leaks.
  2. Set expectations in writing. Say plainly: "Reading is free. A review is welcome but never required. I want your honest opinion, positive or negative."
  3. Disclose. Ask readers to mention that they received a free copy. The FTC expects this disclosure, and it keeps everyone honest.
  4. Do not pay, and do not gift for reviews. No money, gift cards or extras in exchange for a review.
  5. Do not filter for positive readers. Do not ask readers to change a rating or to review only if they loved it.
  6. Send a friendly reminder, once. After launch, one polite thank-you message is fine. Pressure is not.

How many ARC readers do you need?

There is no magic number. Many readers who accept an ARC never finish it, and only some of those share an opinion. Start with a group you can manage personally, then grow it with each book.
