About this book
Before the world knew war, something ancient and terrible was already laughing.
The Laughter from the Dark is narrated by Death and the six other Absolutes (Change, Time, Life, Will, Destiny, and Providence). They bear witness to the darkest chapters of human history, the ones never written down because the survivors were too afraid to remember.
The first murderer, wandering after killing his brother, meets Lamashtu, a healer who poisoned the children of those who mocked her grief. He builds her a city. Generations later, it is a place of cruelty and forbidden knowledge, its people bound to fallen angels. When a prophet warns of judgment, they prepare instead of repenting. When the flood comes, the Laughing People don’t drown. They vanish.
They return from a lightless realm between dimensions as something else: ash-skinned, yellow-eyed, smiling too wide, with a laughter that unravels every mind that hears it. They are the Ones Who Laugh.
Civilizations fall overnight. Only Gilgamesh, prince of Uruk, will seek an alliance with the creatures his people fear most.
Battles became legends. Legends became myths. They were not stories.
The prequel to A Light in the Darkness and The Witch-Bane, and the cosmological foundation of the Death Keeper Chronicles. The Ones Who Laugh have not forgotten, and they are nowhere near finished.
