About this book

The bakery opens before dawn. The bread is already made for people who haven't arrived yet.

The Vaskan family has run a bakery, an inn, and an apothecary in their adopted city for three years. They keep careful records. They cause no trouble. They make themselves useful and hope that useful is enough.

It is not enough.

When a formal licensing complaint arrives — and then a petition, and then a suspension notice — the family must decide what they are willing to become in order to stay. The grandmother, Mireva, has been here before. She has one answer: keep making things for the people who haven't come through the door yet. Her grandchild Fen, eleven years old and watching everything, is quietly learning whether that answer is enough.

The Proving is a warm, luminous literary fantasy about a displaced family holding onto who they are while a city tries to decide what to do with them. It is about bread made with intention. About the two words you say to someone arriving frightened at your door. About what we make before the need is known — and whether that making, done with enough care over enough years, is enough to keep something alive worth keeping.
